Samherji's brand new 6 billion ISK facility is processing with filleting machines from Vélfag8/19/2020 Samherji's brand new high-tech production plant in Dalvík is now up and running. The new 9,000 square meter fish processing facility is among the world's most advanced groundfish plants. Samherji's investment starts at around ISK 6 billion (37M €), and automation is at the forefront. Vélfag filleting machines are at the heart of the transformation process, now with both M700 and M725. Samherji founded in 1983 is one of the largest companies in the Icelandic fish industry and has long been in the lead in the fisheries sector, primarily due to their way of improving and using technology in their part of the value chain in fishing, land-based processing, and utilization of raw materials. In addition to the robust mechanical M700, Samherji has now also invested in the M725, a fully computer-controlled machine designed to fillet large whitefish enabling Samherji to produce clean, high-value fillets. Along with our proprietary filleting process and TakeControl operating system, the machine sets a new industry standard.
The TakeControl software offers features such as data collection, tag-based login, fish size adaptive control, automatic lubrication, and data collection for both quality of the product and valuable information on machine condition and upcoming service. The Vélfag team would like to congratulate Samherji on their modern processing plant in Dalvík. We're proud to be part of the ambitious project.

Vélfag would like to introduce the newest and revolutionary M521 to our heading line. We have put extensive work into developing this machine according to our customer’s needs.
The stand-alone unit is a V-Cut heading machine designed for whole fish, gutted fish, and removal of the collarbone off pre-headed fish. The M521 is built to simplify the customer’s production and is proportionally small, simple, corrosion-free and easy to maintain. The space-saving and straightforward design is easy to clean, which results in less bacteria growth and better fish quality. The working range is 500g-10 kg and maximum throughput approx 40 fish per minute. Our clients have been exceptionally pleased with their brand new M521 yield percentages and running specs. The fish is loaded vertically for maximum yield. Interested? Don’t hesitate to contact our sales team for more information sales@velfag.com. FISK Seafood, one of the biggest fish processors in Iceland, chose the M500 heading machine from Vélfag for the freezer trawler Arnar HU-1.
Vélfag heading machines are designed to increase speed and productivity, which, in turn, leads to higher profits. The throughput is up to 140 fish per minute or as fast as the operator can feed it. Moreover, the belt design and variable knife angle produce an optimal cut and higher yield both for the actual heading as well as the subsequent filleting. The machines are equipped with a Sure-Grip conveyor system to provide better handling of live fish and fish in rigor mortis. The simple and space-saving machine is easy to clean, which leads to less bacterial growth and better quality of the product. M500 easily handles different fish species, for example flatfish, white fish, and redfish. Onboard Arnar HU-1 all species are processed for markets in Europe, the USA, UK, and Asia. The annual catch is 10.000 tons of live weight, which is around 5.000 tons of products. Their new heading machine can offer long term rewards that will support Fisk Seafood to continue to boom in the fast-paced, ever-evolving market. The Vélfag team would like to congratulate FISK Seafood with their new M500 and wish them good fishing in the future. The new Ilivileq GR 2-201 is fully integrated with first-rate processing lines from Vélfag5/11/2020 Brim‘s new and modern freezer trawler Ilivileq arrived in Iceland last week. The production capacity is approximately 150 tonnes per day, and to ensure the best yield, quality, and profit for its catch, Brim chose exclusively Vélfag machinery that will return their investment quickly and continually.
The 81,8-meter vessel is tailor-made with two fully integrated processing lines. The system includes two computer-controlled M505 heading machines that scans and measures the fish for arc cut to get the most valuable meat on the neck without compromising the filleting process. The filleting machines are M700 for small to medium fish and the advanced M725 big fish filleting machine. Both filleting machines are combined with Vélfag‘s skinning equipment to maximize throughput and uptime. With the new high tech operating system Take Control, Vélfag offers constant service and support as our technicians can connect to the machine anywhere in the world with remote access VPN connection. The system is designed to make the fish flow through the process with minimal impact and ensures a precise cut of the delicate and raw material. The operating system offers our clients simplified maintenance, fewer cleaning hours, better yield, and excellent overall quality. Vélfag machinery will help ensure that Ilivileq will be among the most efficient and modern fishing vessels. The fact that Brim, which is the biggest fishing company in Iceland, has once again selected Vélfag solutions confirms our sustained competitiveness leads for 25 years in a tough global market. Vélfag congratulates Brim and the crew with their new vessel. We wish them the best of luck and good fishing in the future. Icelandic factory trawler Tómas Þorvaldsson GK 10 recently completed its record-breaking trip in the North Atlantic. This 67-meter vessel, owned by Thorbjörn hf. in Grindavik, joined the company´s existing factory trawler fleet last year, after which Thorbjörn bought and installed onboard a new M700 filleting machine with combined M825 skinning solution from Vélfag.
Tómas Þorvaldsson docked last week after 34 days at sea with a green weight catch of 752 tonnes valued at ISK 336 Million (€2.15. million). "The M700 filleting machine and the combined M825 skinning machines performed exceptionally well! The broad conveyers and bigger skinning units made everything run efficiently, and the big saithe ran as smooth as silk through the machine.” said skipper Bergþór Gunnlaugsson. Fish processing machines from Vélfag have an excellent track record both at sea and onshore, processing hundreds of thousands of tons through the years. It is no coincidence that Icelandic freezer trawlers process 63% of their valuable Icelandic cod quota with filleting machines from Vélfag. In addition to that, European, UK, Russian, and Norwegian companies put their trust in Vélfag's solutions. The productivity is exceptionally high, returning excellent yield and fillet quality. Vélfag skinning equipment users can expect maximum durability and increased yield. Fewer employees are needed to produce as fillet infeed can be self loading if used in combination with all types of filleting machines from Vélfag. We congratulate the crew and Thorbjörn on harvesting the fruit of this recent year´s significant investments, and persistent efforts. We wish them the best of luck and good fishing in the future. The Vélfag team hopes you and your loved ones are healthy and safe at this time.
Our number one priority is the safety and wellbeing of staff and customers. We send our best wishes for your health and safety as we work through this together. Vélfag ehf. This week our M725 machine was delivered from Vélfags head office space to its new home; Samherji´s brand new state of the art fish processing facility in Dalvík.
Vélfags M725 will be at the core of the new processing plant. Vélfag is a natural fit for Samherji, as both companies take a forward-thinking approach to the industry. The installation of machinery of such high technological levels as M725 makes Samherji one of the most advanced companies in groundfish processing in the world. Samherji has long been in the forefront in the fisheries sector, largely due to their approach of advancing and using technology in their part of the value chain in fishing, land-based processing, and utilization of raw materials. This ambitious project, and the state-of-the-art technology it introduces, will likely advance their position as a leader in the industry. Vélfags newest Fully computer controlled M725 machine is designed to fillet large white fish (20kg+), enabling our customers to produce clean, high-value fillets that are otherwise sold far below their profitability potential. Along with our proprietary filleting process and TakeControl operating system, the machine sets a new industry standard. Vélfag produces the majority of parts that make up our fish processing machines themselfs, everything from knifes to nuts and bolts.
Vélfags production team is still going strong in Ólafsfjörður, but as the company has recently expanded in Akureyri, production has also started up within the new facilities in Baldursnes 2. Vélfag has invested in brand new milling and lathe machines to produce the parts needed for creating the entire Marin line. Machines VM 6030L and SL 8II are welcome additions to the Vélfag family. The machines were designed by Milltronics USA. After arrival, the Vélfags team worked to position the machines while Milltronics technicians made sure that startup went as smoothly as possible. Both machines are now in regular use and are proving to be a great company investment! |
